WWII Bakelite Jewelry: Love and Victory
By: Bambi Deville Engeran
1940s Bakelite jewelry helps to document the efforts of patriots in the USA and by their allies to restore world peace. Nearly 200 images of pins, necklaces, bracelets, and more capture true signs of the time - not only crafted to express solidarity, loss, patriotism, and love, but to make use of a new material that was not restricted by WWII rationing and conservation orders.
Sweetheart pins and pieces emblazoned with General MacArthur's famous quote, "I shall return," are shown along with designs of moveable parts.
The range of colorful jewelry represents Bakelite at its finest, and they are worn fashionably and collected today.
Engeran's discovery of Bakelite came out of a fascination with deco era design and modernist jewelry. The collection presented in this book will exhibit at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans in the near future.
Proceeds from Museum Store purchases fund the continuing educational mission of The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.
