One of the most decorated combat units in U.S. military history, the 1st Cavalry Division was formed in 1921. The symbolism in the patch speaks to the unit's history. The horse head and the yellow color(the traditional color of cavalry) refer to its original structure. The black color represents iron and the switch to tanks and machinery. 1st Cav has been engaged in many U.S. military campaigns, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, the Global War on Terrorism and Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

The history of challenge coins goes back a long time, though the true origin is disputed. Some stories date them back as far as World War I, whereas others claim they are as recent as the Vietnam War.
The modern day challenge coin is used as a symbol of unity, as an award for meritorious behavior, and of course as a challenge. "Coin Checks", as these challenges are called, are a way to boost morale, prove membership, and, if caught without your coin, a way to end up having to buy the challenger's next round of drinks.
