On February 23, 1945, five Marines and one Navy corpsman raised the American flag during World War II's Battle of Iwo Jima. Photographer Joe Rosenthal captured the scene in a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, which was later used to cast the famous sculpture at the Marine Corps War Memorial. The memorial is dedicated to every Marine who has given their life in service to our country since 1775. This glass depiction features the phrase: "Uncommon valor was a common virtue" and was designed by American astist Jack Woodson.
