Activated in 1942, the 501st was attached to the 101st Airborne during World War II and the Vietnam War. A key player in Operation Overlord(the attacks on the Atlantic Wall in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944), the 501st was a part of the paratrooper groups to be dropped behind enemy lines on that fateful day.

A key player in Operation Overlord(the attacks on the Atlantic Wall in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944), the 501st was a part of the paratrooper groups to be dropped behind enemy lines on that fateful day.
Following the victory on D-Day and afterwards in the joining of the beaches of Utah and Omaha(at the cost of the lives of 898 captured, wounded or killed soldiers), the 501st would continue to assist throughout the European campaign(Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge) and would go on to take part in the Vietnam War, the Afghanistan Campaign and the Iraq Campaign.
