Description

Holocaust Triangle Art Tote "Never Again"

During the Holocaust, Nazi forces devised a famous system of symbolic cloth badges to dehumanize, identify, and control, types of “undesirables” imprisoned in the concentration camps.

The most well-known of these badges is the yellow Star of David. This symbol, meant to signal that Jews were not part of the “normal” German population, also shamed and isolated Jewish prisoners.

Other badges worn by prisoners included a red triangle for political prisoners, a green triangle for criminals, a blue triangle for emigrants, a purple triangle for Jehovah’s Witnesses, and a black triangle for those with disabilities and those deemed “asocial” or “racially inferior”, such as vagrants, nonconformists, and other groups. Prisoners with Roma or Sinti heritage were often labeled as “asocial”, but in some camps wore a brown triangle. A pink triangle was assigned to homosexual men, which has since been reclaimed as a symbol of resistance and pride in the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights and equality.

This design, incorporating all of the original Nazi badges, reimagines these symbols of oppression in a kaleidoscopic rainbow of strength, solidarity, and hope. Each piece honors those imprisoned for their identity and celebrates their life.
