Artist James Montgomery Flagg had been his own model for Uncle Sam's likeness on the poster to save the modeling fee.

Uncle Sam is one of the most popular personifications of the United States. However, the term "Uncle Sam" is of somewhat obscure origin. Historical sources attach the name to a meat packer who supplied meat to the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 - Samuel (Uncle Sam) Wilson. Wilson's fairness, reliability, honesty, and devotion to his country are the qualities now associated with "our" Uncle Sam.
