WOW 4" Notebook
During World War II, the young women of America lined up at factories and arsenals to fill the jobs left vacant by the men who went off to fight. Each women involved in the production of military hardware became knonw as a WOW (Woman Ordnance Worker). These women wore red bandanas with distinctive white markings of the "shell and flame" not only for saftey reasons but from a strong sense of pride, accomlishment, and achievement in their contributions to the war effort. They bagged gunpowder, made weapons, created ammunition, and also operated heavy machine cranes, miling machines, and countless other heavy tools that most women had never even heard of before the war.
