Description
Ernie Pyle was born on August 3, 1900 and was killed by enemy fire on Iejima (then known as le Shima) during the Battle of Okinawa on April 18, 1945.
Pyle won a Pulitzer Prize for his stories about ordinary "dogface" American infantry soldiers during World War II. This style was honed from 1935 through 1941 when he wrote human interest columns for the Scripps-Howard newspaper syndicate. His simple accounts of ordinary people across North America were written in a disctinctive folksy style.

Gave parent happiness
Ernie Pyle was a childhood hero of my mother in law. She would read his reports from the front. Ernie’s reputation helped her to decide to major in journalism at college in the 1950’s. We gave the bookmark to her and she was very happy.
