Rescuing Da Vinci uses 460 photographs to tell the untold story of the "Monuments Men" and their discovery of more than 1,000 repositories filled with millions of items: paintings, sculpture, furniture, archives, and other treasures stolen during WWII by Adolph Hitler and the Nazis.

The book includes photographs of the extraordinary measures taken by museum officials in Europe to protect their masterpieces from the Nazis' planned looting.

The Allies created a special force known as Monuments, Fine Art, and Archives Section comprised of museum directors, curators and art historians - men and women from over than 15 nations - who spent more than six years locating, rescuing, and returning these treasures to the countries from which they were stolen. Efforts to locate and return missing artwork continue to this day.

    I have not had a chance to really get into the book yet, but it arrived in good condition and looks like it is worth my purchace.

    I cant believe the quality of this publication. It took my breath away. This is a best for any one who appreciates the masters and the artistry that they possessed.

    This book was excellent--full 0f photos of the art and locations important to the rescue of art stolen by Hitler during World War II. It had a nice combination of written information about the crimes associated with stolen art and photos of the art itself. This hardback book is very substantial. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend its purchase.

    big ww2 amateur historian here. Ive read everything I can get my hands on. This book was completely new to me. Most of the content does not even appear in a Google search. Lots of pictures I can find no where else. Get it!

    This amazing book stands alone as a national treasure showcasing the heinous art thefts and destruction done by the Nazis and the American and Allied efforts to retrieve and restore them. The story is riveting and exceptionally well told along side truly beautiful reproduction of the works of art . The photographs depicting the story combined with the impressive scholarly description of the art make a powerful combination. I had previously believed that I had a good understanding of the scope of the Nazi deprivations, but I was wrong. With each turning of the page the enormity and vileness of their crimes registers ever more incredible. This book is so good, that I feel somewhat guilty having purchased it at a discount. I think I will have to donate the difference to the museum to ease my conscience. We were stationed in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970's and toured extensively in and around many of the sites mentioned in the book. We never heard so much as a whisper from the locals and tour guides about the truly historical crimes that occurred at those locales. Buy this book. After reading it you will still go back again and again to see the artwork and to appreciate the heroes who helped save it for the world.
