SPARS DDay Poster

This recruiting poster for the Coast Guard SPARs, circa 1942, features the DDay Museum logo at the buttom. Illustrated by J. Valentin, it depicts a saluting SPAR imposed over imagery of a pioneer woman with a rifle defending her Conestoga wagon.

The term SPARS comes from the Coast Guard motto. The latin version is Semper Paratus, which in English translates to Always Ready. The purpose of the SPARS was similar to that of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service); to free men up from stateside duties so that they could fight overseas.
